All Three Day-One Games Land on Game Pass Ultimate Only

Microsoft's second August wave adds ten titles to Xbox Game Pass, but the three games launching on their actual release day skip the cheaper Premium tier entirely.

All Three Day-One Games Land on Game Pass Ultimate Only

Microsoft has loaded ten more games into Xbox Game Pass for the back half of August, and every single day-one launch in the batch requires Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass. The list went up on Xbox Wire on August 18 in a post by Megan Spurr, the service's senior community lead. Six of the ten do reach the cheaper Premium tier. The three brand-new releases don't.

That gap is the real story. Premium runs $14.99 a month, Ultimate $22.99. For that $8 difference, Premium subscribers get a roguelite fighter, a heist game, a cozy island sim and a couple of arcade titles this wave — all worth playing, none of them new. Ultimate holders get Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy on the day it ships, plus two smaller launches.

None of this is hidden. It's just easy to miss unless you read the small tier tags stapled to each title. When Microsoft rebuilt its subscription lineup in late 2025, same-day releases became the thing you pay top dollar for, and this wave is that policy working exactly as written rather than sitting on a slide somewhere.

Every Game in This Wave, and When It Lands

Ten titles across two weeks, with one spilling into September. A caution before you plan your evenings: the listed date is when a game shows up for members, not always when it's finished. One of these arrives as an early-access build. Here's the full run in order.

Live now through August 20

  • Egging On — August 18 (Premium, Ultimate, PC)
  • Vapor World: Over the Mind — August 19 (Ultimate, PC, day one)
  • BlazBlue Entropy Effect X — August 19 (Premium, Ultimate, PC)
  • Relooted — August 19 (Premium, Ultimate, PC)
  • Starsand Island — August 20 (Premium, Ultimate, PC)

Vapor World lands through Game Preview, Xbox's early-access channel, so treat it as a work in progress — it's a story-driven souls-like platformer built around deflecting attacks rather than dodging them. Relooted is the sleeper of the group, a heist game about stealing back looted African artifacts from museums that never gave them up.

The August 25 to 31 stretch

  • Aerial_Knight's DropShot — August 25 (Premium, Ultimate, PC)
  • Blood Dungeon — August 25 (Ultimate, PC, day one)
  • Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy — August 27 (Ultimate, PC, day one)
  • Young Suns — August 31 (Premium, Ultimate, PC)

This is where the wave concentrates. Two of the three day-one titles land inside 48 hours of each other, and Resonance closes out the month as the only release here with a full-size marketing budget behind it.

One straggler on September 1

Shelldiver crosses into September, available on Ultimate, Premium and PC. Also worth noting if you missed it: Wolfenstein 3D quietly joined Ultimate and PC on August 12. It's the 1992 id Software shooter that more or less invented the genre, and it costs you nothing to see where all of this started.

What Game Pass Ultimate Buys That Premium Doesn't

Do the arithmetic and the tiers get clearer. Premium at $14.99 a month is a catalog subscription — a deep, well-curated one, but the games arrive after their launch window has passed. Ultimate at $22.99 is a release-day subscription. Over a year that's $179.88 against $275.88, a $96 difference for the privilege of playing new games the week they come out.

Worth remembering how volatile that number has been. Microsoft pushed Ultimate to $29.99 in October 2025, a 50 percent jump, then reversed course in April 2026 and cut it back to $22.99 — a $7 monthly reduction, according to Forbes. Anyone paying today is paying roughly $84 a year less than they would have last winter for the same tier.

Why Resonance Is the Wave's Real Headliner

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy arrives August 27 from Asobo Studio and Focus Entertainment, and it's the one game here a non-subscriber might actually buy at full price. It's a prequel following Sophia, the character introduced in 2022's A Plague Tale: Requiem, on a trip to somewhere called Minotaur's Island.

The interesting wrinkle is that reporting so far describes it as more action-driven than the stealth-and-hide rhythm the series built its reputation on. That's a genuine risk for a franchise whose fans came for tension, not combat. It runs on Series X|S, PC, cloud and handheld from day one, so a Steam Deck-style session on an Xbox Ally is on the table.

Five Games Disappear on August 31

Departures matter more than arrivals if you're mid-playthrough. Leaving on August 31: Another Crab's Treasure, I Am Your Beast, Neon Abyss, One Lonely Outpost, and The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt — Remastered Edition. NBA 2K26 follows on September 6. The Witcher 3 is the painful one — it's a 50-plus hour game with under two weeks left on the clock.

So Should You Pay the Extra $8?

If you play two or three big releases a year at launch, Ultimate pays for itself against $70 retail prices. If you tend to play games a year or two late, Premium's catalog is the better deal and this wave proves it — six new-to-you titles for $14.99. Check your tier in Xbox settings before August 27, and if you're mid-Witcher, put those hours in now.
