Britain Just Lost Professor X In The New X-Men Cast

Marvel Studios revealed its new X-Men cast at D23 in Anaheim on 14 August, and one detail should land oddly for British fans: Charles Xavier isn't ours any more. Patrick Stewart played Professor X on and off from 2000 right through to 2022. James McAvoy took the younger version across four films after that. The chair now goes to Christopher Abbott, an American actor best known for unsettling, low-budget work such as Possessor.

Britain doesn't come away with nothing. Kit Connor, the Londoner who grew up on screen in Heartstopper, has been cast as Scott Summers — Cyclops — a role held before him by two Americans, James Marsden and Tye Sheridan. So the two headline swaps run in opposite directions. A part Britain effectively owned for a quarter of a century heads to the States, and an American one comes here.

The film reaches cinemas on 5 May 2028 and is directed by Jake Schreier, who made Thunderbolts* for the studio. It's the first proper X-Men film Marvel Studios has made itself, following Disney's takeover of 20th Century Fox in 2019, and it arrives after Avengers: Secret Wars in December 2027. Count from Dark Phoenix in 2019 and that's a nine-year gap before mutants return as a team.

Who's In The New X-Men Cast

Kevin Feige brought the actors out together, noting they had only met backstage minutes earlier, and warned that this isn't the finished line-up. No Wolverine, no Magneto, no Beast or Nightcrawler yet. What was confirmed is a six-strong team plus a villain, and each name replaces someone audiences already picture in the part.

How Each Role Changes Hands

Recasting a superhero is not like recasting a lead in a drama. Fans have a fixed image, usually from a film they saw as teenagers, and the new actor spends a whole press cycle being measured against it. Three of these swaps carry more weight than the rest.

Cyclops moves from Hollywood to London

Marsden played Scott Summers as a stiff, slightly humourless team captain across four films. Sheridan took him younger and softer. Connor is 22 and arrives off Heartstopper, a British-made series with an audience that skews far younger than the average Marvel opening weekend. Pairing him with Sink puts the franchise's central romance back at the middle of the story rather than at its edges.

Storm goes to an actor with no film credits

This is the genuine surprise. Halle Berry played Ororo Munroe in four films with an Oscar already on the shelf. Maya Boyd comes from Broadway and has not led a feature. Marvel has taken this route before and it has generally paid off, but it means one of the most recognisable characters in the team is carried by someone the audience has no prior read on at all.

Jean Grey is now on her fourth face

Janssen, Turner and, briefly, Haley Ramm have all played her since 2000. Sink is unusual here because she isn't starting cold. She already appeared as Jean Grey in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which makes her the anchor of the group and explains why she was the one standing beside Schreier on stage.

The Villain Nobody Has Played Before

Adam Driver was revealed by video rather than in person, and his character is the only one on the list with no live-action history. Marvel's own announcement named him Nathaniel Milbury, an alias Mister Sinister uses in the comics; some outlets reported the name as Nathaniel Essex. Either way, Fox spent years teasing this character and never delivered him. Handing that debut to Driver is a statement about how seriously the studio is treating the reboot.

Why The Recast Stings More Here

Britain has quietly supplied this franchise for 25 years. Stewart from Yorkshire, McAvoy from Glasgow, Sophie Turner as Jean Grey. Two of those three roles have now gone elsewhere. The counterweight is that Connor, at 22, is being handed a character Marvel will presumably run for a decade. If you're keeping score, Britain traded a legacy part for a long-term one — arguably the better deal, even if it doesn't feel like it this week.

What To Watch For Before 2028

Two things worth tracking. First, the remaining casting: Feige said the line-up isn't complete, so Wolverine, Magneto and the rest are still to come, and those announcements will likely drip out over the next year. Second, no filming location has been made public, and a UK shoot would matter for anyone in the industry here. For now, put 5 May 2028 in the diary and expect the arguments about the new X-Men cast to run for most of the next two years.
