Marvel's New X-Men Cast Has a Second Professor X

Marvel Studios has revealed its new X-Men cast at the D23 showcase, and the oddest thing about it isn't who got the parts — it's that Professor Charles Xavier now has two working actors at the same time. Christopher Abbott will play the telepath in the 2028 reboot, while Sir Patrick Stewart, who originated the role on screen in 2000, is still playing him in Avengers: Doomsday.

The rest of the line-up: Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Scott Summers, better known as Cyclops, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, and Broadway actor Maya Boyd as Ororo Munroe, or Storm. Adam Driver turned up by video to announce he'd be playing Nathaniel Milbury — a name comics readers recognised instantly as an alias for Mister Sinister.

Jake Schreier, who made Thunderbolts*, directs. The film reaches cinemas on 5 May 2028, a Friday in the same week as the early May bank holiday, and roughly nine years after Disney's purchase of 20th Century Fox handed the mutants back to Marvel. Seven fresh faces are stepping into roles that eleven other actors have already filled.

Who's In, and Who Wore It First

Six of the seven characters have screen history, most of it built during Fox's long run from 2000 onwards. That means every new name arrives with a direct comparison attached, which is a harder start than it sounds. Here's who is following whom.

Jean Grey, Cyclops and Storm

Sink takes Jean Grey after Famke Janssen, who held it from 2000 to 2014, and Sophie Turner, who played the younger version from 2016 to 2019. Connor follows James Marsden and Tye Sheridan as Cyclops. Boyd inherits Storm from Halle Berry and Alexandra Shipp — and it's her first feature film. She is 23, trained in musical theatre at the University of Michigan and made her Broadway debut in Merrily We Roll Along in 2023.

Xavier, Rogue and Emma Frost

Abbott has the heaviest inheritance of the lot: Stewart played Xavier on and off for more than two decades, and James McAvoy carried the younger version through four films. Navarrette takes Rogue from Anna Paquin, who anchored the character across the original trilogy. Weaving becomes the third screen Emma Frost, after Tahyna Tozzi in 2009 and January Jones in X-Men: First Class in 2011.

The Villain Nobody Has Filmed

Driver is the exception. Mister Sinister — Nathaniel Essex in the comics, a centuries-old geneticist obsessed with mutant DNA — has never appeared in live action, despite years of hints during the Fox era. According to Forbes, Kevin Feige had asked Driver to join the MCU repeatedly over the years and been turned down every time. This is the pitch that finally worked.

Why the New X-Men Cast Skips the Obvious Stars

Fox built its mutants around established prestige names: Stewart, Sir Ian McKellen, Berry, Paquin, McAvoy. The new X-Men cast leans the other way. Sink and Connor are television-famous with young audiences rather than box-office proven, Navarrette and Boyd are near-unknowns, and the recognisable adults — Driver, Weaving, Abbott — are character actors rather than franchise headliners. That's a deliberate bet on ensemble chemistry over marquee value, and it keeps a decade of sequels affordable.

Two Professor Xs in the Same Universe

Stewart and McKellen are both back as Xavier and Magneto in Avengers: Doomsday, which lands well before 2028. Marvel's multiverse framing lets that sit alongside Abbott's version without either being cancelled out, but it does mean British audiences will see two Xaviers within roughly two years. It's the clearest signal yet that Doomsday is a send-off for the old guard, not a bridge to the new team.

The British Thread Running Through It

Connor is the obvious home interest — the London-born actor broke through on Heartstopper and now takes on the X-Men's field leader, a role Marsden played for four films. Stewart and McKellen, meanwhile, gave the original series much of its gravity, and their return in Doomsday means the handover happens on screen rather than quietly between releases. Expect a fair amount of British casting news still to come; six mutants does not make a full roster.

What to Watch For Before May 2028

The next real data point arrives sooner than the film. Sink's Jean Grey is set to appear first in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which gives audiences an early read on how these characters slot into the wider MCU. Watch for the remaining casting announcements — Wolverine, Magneto and Nightcrawler are all unfilled — and for whether Marvel confirms a UK shoot, which would matter for local crews and studio space.

If you're planning ahead, 5 May 2028 is the date to pencil in, though UK cinemas often open Marvel titles a day or two before the American release. In the meantime, the honest test isn't the cast list. It's whether Schreier can make seven relatively unknown mutants feel essential against a villain no one has ever seen move.
