Marvel's Wolverine PS5 Is $124.95, Unless You Shop Around
Insomniac's long-delayed X-Men game finally has a date, a local rating and a price sheet — and the official RRP is not what Australian shops are charging.
Marvel's Wolverine PS5 now has everything locked down — a date, a rating and a price — and the price is the part worth reading twice. Sony's recommended retail is $124.95 for the standard edition, but Australian retailers including Amazon have been listing the disc closer to $99. That's roughly a quarter off the sticker before the game has even shipped, which is unusual this far out from a first-party launch.
The release date is 15 September 2026, PlayStation 5 only. Insomniac Games is developing, Sony Interactive Entertainment is publishing, and it sits in the same continuity as the studio's two Spider-Man games. It has been a long road: the project was announced back in September 2021, which means nearly five years between the reveal trailer and the shelf.
A lot happened in that gap. A December 2023 ransomware attack by the Rhysida group dumped internal development material online. By October 2024 the original creative leads, Brian Horton and Cameron Christian, had been replaced — Marcus Smith took over as creative director and Mike Daly as game director. Games rarely survive that kind of turbulence without slipping. This one did, and now it's weeks away.
What Marvel's Wolverine PS5 Actually Costs
There are three numbers to keep straight, and they don't line up neatly. The official PlayStation Store listing, the disc price at bricks-and-mortar chains, and the upgrade path between editions are all different figures. If you buy on impulse the day it launches, you will almost certainly pay more than you needed to.
Standard, Deluxe And The $15 Bridge
The standard edition carries a $124.95 RRP. The Digital Deluxe sits at $139.95 and adds five suits — Incredible, Savage, Night Hunter, New Leather and Age of Apocalypse — plus five claw styles, four technique points, early unlocks for the classic brown suit and reflective claws, and four PlayStation avatars. If you start on standard and change your mind, the Deluxe upgrade is $15, so nobody is trapped by the first choice.
Why The Shelf Price Sits Below The Sticker
Australian retail rarely honours full RRP on major console releases, and competition between the big chains and online sellers usually knocks $20 to $30 off day one. That's exactly what's happening here. Preordering physical at the discounted rate and skipping the digital storefront saves real money, and it keeps resale on the table — something the Digital Deluxe quietly removes.
An Australian Voice Under The Claws
Logan is played by Liam McIntyre, the Australian actor most people know from Spartacus. It's a genuinely local hook in a game that otherwise travels nowhere near here — the story moves between Canada, Japan and Madripoor, Marvel's fictional Southeast Asian island nation. Krizia Bajos voices Jean Grey, Kelly Hu plays Tyger Tiger, and Troy Baker turns up as Nathaniel Essex, a name X-Men readers will recognise immediately.
Rated MA 15+ Here, Harsher In The US
PlayStation's Australian listing shows an MA 15+ classification. In North America the ESRB handed it a Mature 17+ rating citing blood and gore, intense violence, partial nudity, drug reference and strong language. That's a meaningful split, and it matters if you're buying for a teenager. MA 15+ is legally restricted at the counter in Australia, but it is not the R 18+ some people expected from a game built around claw combat.
Insomniac has built in a violence customisation setting that lets players dial the gore down, part of a broad accessibility suite covering gameplay assists, motion sensitivity, visual filters, audio options and subtitle sizing and colour. That toggle is likely part of why the local rating landed where it did.
What Kind Of Game Is It, Really?
Not an open-world Spider-Man clone. Insomniac has described the structure as largely linear and story-driven with some open zones, closer in shape to Uncharted or The Last of Us than to a sprawling city map. Combat leans on combos, dodging and countering. The healing factor is a system rather than a cheat — inhibitor projectors shut it off and leave Logan genuinely vulnerable.
Around that sit Nightmare Doors, repeatable combat trials for players who want the challenge, plus motorcycle sequences and customisable claws. The plot picks up three years after Logan walked away from Team X, pulling him back in to investigate mutant abductions run by industrialist Bolivar Trask and his cybernetic Reavers militia. Jean Grey, Mystique, Sabretooth, Callisto, Toad, Leech and Caliban all appear.
The Yellow Hardware, And When To Set An Alarm
Sony is launching a full accessory range alongside it, and Australia is getting all six items — including the metallic Adamantium variant we've missed on previous console tie-ins. A PS5 Digital Edition bundle with the game runs $999.95. DualSense controllers in Battle Yellow and Adamantium are $134.95 each. Console covers for the PS5 and PS5 Pro are $119.95 apiece. Preorders open Wednesday 19 August at 10:00am AEST.
Two practical moves before then. If you own a PS5 Pro, the game is enhanced with PSSR upscaling and ray tracing targeting 4K at 60fps, so the Pro covers are the only cosmetic thing you're missing. And if you want the game itself, compare the $124.95 store listing against retail preorders before you tap buy — that gap is the easiest $25 you'll save this year.
