One Mark Decided Rank 1064 on the NEET UG Merit List

The NEET UG merit list released by the J&K Board of Professional Entrance Examinations on 12 August turns on a single mark. The candidate at rank 1064 scored 501 out of 720. The one sitting immediately behind, at 1065, scored 500. That one mark is the whole difference between being counted among the 1,064 who crossed the 500 line and falling just outside it.

Widen the frame a little and 1,087 candidates from Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh scored 500 or more. The top of the list is far steeper than the middle: every one of the first 100 names scored at least 602. The best-placed candidate from the region is a woman, holding an All India Rank of 99.

All of this matters because the list is the spine of everything that follows. Greater Kashmir reports 1,675 MBBS seats cleared for the 2026-27 session — 1,525 in government colleges and 150 in private ones. Before counselling begins, candidates have until 1 pm on 14 August to object to where they have been placed.

What the NEET UG merit list actually shows

Read past the headline count and the shape of the ranking is the real story. Scores bunch tightly through the middle, which is exactly why one point can shove a candidate past several dozen names. Near the top, the air thins quickly — the jump from 500 to 602 buys you only a hundred places.

Girls led NEET nationally. The top 100 didn't follow

When the national result was declared on 16 July, girls made up more than 58 per cent of everyone who qualified, according to Organiser. Business Standard reported that 56.8 per cent of the women who sat the paper cleared it, against 55.1 per cent of the men. Set beside that, 28 women in J&K's top 100 reads as oddly low.

The two figures are measuring different things, and that gap is the point. Qualifying is a wide gate — roughly 11.21 lakh candidates walked through it nationally. A UT's top 100 is a needle's eye. Women dominate the broad pool and thin out sharply at the extreme end of the curve. That the region's single highest scorer is a woman at AIR 99 is the counterweight worth noting.

Do 1,675 seats make a 500 score safe?

On paper the arithmetic looks generous: 1,064 candidates above 500 against 1,675 MBBS seats. It isn't that simple. Of those seats, 150 sit in private colleges, where annual fees run into lakhs of rupees and the financial calculation is nothing like a government seat. Category reservations, document status and the order of college preferences all reshape who ends up where.

Treat 500 as a floor rather than a promise. The NEET UG merit list is a ranking, not an allotment letter, and every year some candidates with comfortable scores end up with a college they never listed because they filled preferences carelessly.

What to fix before the deadline

This version of the list is provisional, which is the useful part. BOPEE has opened a short correction window, and the things worth checking are narrow and specific. Notification 145-BOPEE of 2026, dated 12 August, sets out what candidates are expected to verify.

Check the category column, not just the rank

Candidates are asked to confirm merit position, category status and any flagged document deficiency. A category certificate that doesn't hold up is not a minor clerical matter — the board has said such candidates get considered under Open Merit instead, which for most people means a considerably worse effective rank.

Missing documents run on the same clock

Registration and document upload ran from 7 to 10 August. Anything the board has marked as deficient must be supplied by the same 14 August cut-off. There is no separate, later window for paperwork, so a document gap left unaddressed simply travels into the final list.

Objections must be filed in person

Email submissions are not accepted. Objections go to the BOPEE offices in Jammu or Srinagar, delivered either by the candidate or an authorised representative. For families outside those two cities, that means planning the trip now rather than on the morning of the deadline.

Sports category ranks are decided elsewhere

Candidates applying under the sports category will have their standing determined separately by the J&K Sports Council. An unexpected position in the current sheet is therefore not necessarily the last word for them.

What happens after this

Once objections are dealt with, BOPEE will publish the final NEET UG merit list and notify the online counselling schedule as a separate announcement — it has not been dated yet. If you are anywhere in this list, do two things today: read your own row line by line for category and document flags, and start ranking colleges honestly rather than aspirationally. Then keep watching the board's notifications page, because the counselling window historically opens with very little warning.
