A Cape Town Museum Took 15 Months to Replace One Woman

A Cape Town museum went 15 months without a permanent leader, and on August 12 it finally ended the wait. Zeitz MOCAA named Elvira Dyangani Ose, the Spanish curator who ran Barcelona's contemporary art museum until April, as its artistic director. She takes up the post on October 1.

The vacancy was never routine. Koyo Kouoh, who had run the museum as executive director and chief curator for six years, died in May 2025. The Senegalese-Swiss curator had just been chosen to direct the 61st Venice Biennale, a job that would have made her the first African woman to hold it. Her death emptied two of the most closely watched chairs in the art world at the same time.

That is why one hire in South Africa registers far beyond the V&A Waterfront. Zeitz MOCAA is the largest museum devoted to contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora. London's Heatherwick Studio carved it out of a 1924 grain silo, and it opened on September 22, 2017 with 9,500 square metres of custom-built space spread across nine floors. It turns 10 in September 2027.

Who Is Elvira Dyangani Ose?

Born in Córdoba, Dyangani Ose has spent her career shuttling between African art scenes and institutions in Europe and North America. From 2021 until April this year she directed the Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona, better known as MACBA, where she was the first woman and the first person of colour to lead the museum since its founding in 1987.

Barcelona, London and New York

Before Barcelona she directed The Showroom in London, a small non-profit space with an outsized reputation for backing artists early. She has also held curatorial roles at Tate Modern in London and at Creative Time in New York, the public art commissioner behind large-scale works in city streets. Her through-line, across all of it, has been artists from Africa and the diaspora.

The Abu Dhabi Job on Her Calendar

She is also artistic director of the Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial for its 2026–2027 edition, a commitment that overlaps with her Cape Town start date. The announcement did not spell out how the two will sit together. It is a fair question for anyone watching how much of her attention the museum actually gets in year one.

Why One Hire Took 15 Months

Fifteen months is long even by museum standards, where searches for a major directorship typically run six months to a year. Two things stretched it. The first is that Kouoh's death was sudden, so there was no succession runway. The second is that Zeitz MOCAA is a young institution with a global profile and a local mandate, and those two pull in different directions.

Note the title on the door, too. Kouoh held a combined executive director and chief curator role. Dyangani Ose has been announced as artistic director, which on paper is a narrower brief. David Green, a co-founder and co-chair of the museum, described her remit in those terms.

She will oversee the museum's curatorial vision and direction, leading the institution through its next chapter.

Reaction in South Africa has been warm rather than guarded. The artist and cultural historian Sue Williamson, one of the country's most senior voices on contemporary art, called it a good choice and wished the incoming director well.

What the Cape Town Museum Is Handing Her

She inherits a building that is itself the main attraction. The silo conversion turned 42 concrete tubes into a scooped-out central atrium, and it became a case study in adaptive reuse the year it opened. The museum was built as a not-for-profit partnership between the V&A Waterfront and the German businessman Jochen Zeitz, whose collection seeded it. Nine floors is a lot of programming to fill every year.

It also carries a persistent question that predates Kouoh: whose museum is it? A private European collection housed in a heritage industrial building on a waterfront tourist precinct is a complicated proposition in Cape Town. Kouoh spent six years shifting the answer toward artists and audiences on the continent. That is the work now in someone else's hands.

The Venice Thread Connecting the Two

There is a detail in this story most coverage buries. Before she died, Kouoh appointed Dyangani Ose to serve on the Venice Biennale's Golden Lion jury as one of five women. The person now taking her museum is someone she had chosen for her own Biennale.

That Biennale is running right now. La Biennale di Venezia decided, with her family's backing, to stage Kouoh's exhibition as she conceived it, under the title In Minor Keys. It opened on May 9 and runs at the Giardini and the Arsenale until November 22, 2026. Canada has a permanent pavilion in the Giardini, so Canadian visitors making the trip this autumn will walk through her final curatorial statement.

What to Watch After October 1

The first real signal will be programming. Watch what Dyangani Ose announces for 2027, because that season lands on the museum's tenth anniversary and will show whether she continues Kouoh's direction or resets it. Watch, too, for whether a separate chief executive is named alongside her, which would confirm the leadership role has been split in two.
