The Awarapan 2 box office run has done something Hindi cinema almost never gets to do: turn a sequel to a commercial failure into the biggest solo hit of its lead actor's career. Six days after its August 14 release, Emraan Hashmi's return as Shivam Pandit sits at roughly Rs 106 crore net in India, with a worldwide gross that has crossed the Rs 150 crore mark, according to Indian Express.

Now the detail that makes those numbers land properly. The 2007 original, directed by Mohit Suri, finished its entire theatrical life at about Rs 7 crore. The sequel passed that figure on its opening Friday alone, taking around Rs 22.5 crore. Not in a week, not over a holiday stretch — in a single day. Nineteen years of cult reputation, cashed in one afternoon.

This matters beyond trade chatter because of what the film cost. The Hollywood Reporter India pegs the budget under Rs 50 crore; other trackers put it closer to Rs 30 crore. Either way, a mid-budget thriller has outrun far more expensive releases this month, and that kind of result quietly decides which scripts studios say yes to next year.

Awarapan opened in June 2007 and sank. What kept it alive was television and, later, streaming — a slow, unplanned second life built on Mithoon's soundtrack and Hashmi's brooding gangster act. Vishesh Films spent nearly two decades letting that goodwill compound, then released the sequel into an Independence Day weekend with barely any competition.

Nitin Kakkar directs this one. Hashmi returns as Shivam, with Disha Patani as Zara and Shabana Azmi as Nafisa Nawaz, and the story moves from an abandoned infant to an Interpol operation against a trafficking ring in Bangkok. The Clash It Won Comfortably

Sunny Deol's Batwara 1947 released the same day and has managed about Rs 31.58 crore net in six days, with Day 6 at Rs 0.83 crore and 8 per cent occupancy. Shabana Azmi is in both films. Only one of them is filling seats.

What It Changes for Emraan Hashmi

This is Hashmi's highest-grossing solo release, second overall in his filmography only to Tiger 3, where he played the antagonist. He has spent years in supporting roles and streaming titles after his run as a hitmaking lead faded. Reviews have been mixed — Rotten Tomatoes shows 45 per cent, with critics praising him and calling the script predictable — but audiences clearly didn't wait for permission. Hashmi also underwent abdominal surgery during the Rajasthan schedule and returned to finish the shoot.

The second Saturday and Sunday are the real test. If the film holds above Rs 8-10 crore a day across the weekend, a Rs 200 crore worldwide lifetime is realistic; a sharp fall means the holiday did most of the work.
