Jana Nayagan Box Office: Why Amazon Walked Away Early

The Jana Nayagan box office run threw up an odd headline on day 22: after three straight weeks of shrinking numbers, the daily figure actually went up. Trade tracker Sacnilk put the Thalapathy Vijay film's day-22 India net at roughly Rs 0.67 crore, about 3.1 per cent higher than the day before. Worldwide, the running total now sits at around Rs 320 crore.

That growth is real. It's also close to meaningless. A 3.1 per cent bump on Rs 0.65 crore is about Rs 2 lakh — roughly what a single well-attended multiplex screen makes over a weekend. The film opened with somewhere near Rs 42 crore net on day one. Three weeks later it is earning in a full day what it used to earn in about ninety minutes.

Strip out the percentage and the shape is clear. Directed by H. Vinoth and produced by Venkat K. Narayana for KVN Productions, Vijay's 69th and final film has taken roughly Rs 195 crore net in India, about Rs 227 crore gross at home, and between Rs 319 crore and Rs 320 crore worldwide depending on which tracker you trust. Against a budget widely reported in the Rs 300-500 crore range, that number is going to be argued over for a while.

What the Jana Nayagan box office numbers actually say

The week-on-week fall tells the story better than any single day. Week one brought in about Rs 149 crore net. Week two dropped to roughly Rs 32.5 crore — a fall of nearly 78 per cent. Week three came in at about Rs 12.7 crore, down another 61 per cent. For a star of Vijay's pull, that curve is steep. Big Tamil openers usually hold their second Saturday and Sunday better than this one did.

How Vijay's farewell film ended up here

Three things happened before a single ticket was sold, and each of them cost the film money.

An opening below Leo and The GOAT

Day one brought about Rs 48 crore gross in India and roughly Rs 78 crore worldwide across more than 13,000 shows, according to The Hollywood Reporter India. Strong on paper — but below the openings of both Leo and The Greatest of All Time. For a film sold as the last time you'd see Vijay on screen, that was the first sign that the event framing wasn't converting the way the trade expected.

A Pongal release that never happened

The film was built for the Pongal and Makar Sankranti window, with a 9 January 2026 date. A drawn-out certification fight with the CBFC killed it. The Madras High Court eventually stepped in and directed the board to certify the film, but by then the holiday corridor — the single most lucrative stretch in the Tamil calendar — was gone. The film finally reached theatres on 23 July 2026.

The full film leaking in April

Then came the worst of it. On 9 April 2026, more than three months before release, the complete film leaked online. Industry estimates of the damage ran into hundreds of crores. Whatever the true figure, a full-length pirated copy circulating for fourteen weeks removes the one thing a farewell film depends on: the need to be in a hall on opening weekend.

Why Tamil Nadu carried the whole thing

Home state numbers held up when nothing else did. Jana Nayagan crossed Rs 100 crore gross in Tamil Nadu, making it the ninth Vijay film in a row to do so — a streak no other Tamil star currently has. Overseas added around Rs 92 crore gross by the second week, with the Gulf, Malaysia and North America doing the usual heavy lifting. The rest of India contributed comparatively little.

When can you actually stream it at home?

Not soon, and that's the strangest part. Amazon Prime Video had picked up streaming rights for a reported Rs 121 crore, then withdrew from the deal in March 2026 — before the leak, before release. Zee Tamil holds satellite rights at a reported Rs 64 crore, and T-Series paid about Rs 35 crore for audio, said to be a record for a Tamil film. But with no confirmed OTT buyer, there is no announced streaming date. If you still want to see it, the theatre is currently the only guaranteed option.

What to watch in week five

Watch the screen count, not the collections. At under Rs 1 crore a day nationally, exhibitors will start pulling shows fast, and single screens in Tamil Nadu will be the last to let go. The film has already entered the top ten highest-grossing Tamil movies of all time, so the record books are settled either way. The bigger question sits outside the box office: Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam won 108 seats in the 2026 assembly election, ahead of the DMK's 59 and the AIADMK's 47 but short of the 118 needed for a majority. His day job changed. Whether Rs 320 crore counts as a fitting send-off depends entirely on what that budget really was — and nobody involved has published it.
