Jharkhand Recruitment Exams Scrapped — Now Those Hired Protest

Dozens of Jharkhand recruitment exams stretching back more than a decade have been cancelled, and the students who spent 26 days on the street demanding exactly that have gone home — for two months, at least. The JPSC-JSSC Reform Manch suspended its sit-in at Ranchi's Jaipal Singh Munda stadium on Tuesday, swapping an open-ended agitation for a deadline it says the government must meet.

The cabinet cleared the cancellations on Monday. Eight separate notifications followed on Tuesday night, formally scrapping tests advertised by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission and the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission, along with every exam handled by an outsourced vendor, TSR Data Processing Pvt Ltd, since 2014. Twenty-two people have been arrested in the police investigation so far.

If you sat any of those papers, this isn't an abstract governance story. The JSSC Combined Graduate Level exam alone was advertised for 2,027 posts. Around 2,000 candidates who cleared it, got appointment letters and are already drawing salaries in state departments marched from the State Secretariat to Birsa Chowk in Ranchi on Tuesday — not to celebrate, but to ask the government to take the decision back.

Which Jharkhand Recruitment Exams Got Cancelled

This is not a clerical-cadre story. The scrapped list cuts across almost every arm of the state government, which is why the reaction has been so loud in districts far from the capital.

Several of these advertisements are years old. Candidates who started preparing as fresh graduates are now in their thirties, having cleared prelims, mains or interviews that no longer count for anything.

Why the Exam Count Keeps Changing in News Reports

You'll see 22, 39 and 44 in different headlines, and all three are defensible. The Hindu reported 22 exams cancelled with 23 more sent for investigation. India TV counted 39 cancellations plus six postponements. ETV Bharat and Organiser put the total at 44. The gap comes from how each outlet sliced the same eight notifications.

Broadly, 19 advertisements floated between 2023 and 2026 were dropped because the vendor ran them, two more were part-handled by agencies under a cloud, six from 2024-25 are on hold while the CID verifies agency credentials, and 17 older exams from 2010 to 2022 remain under investigation. Add or exclude any bucket and the headline number moves.

What Investigators Say They Actually Found

The case that broke this open involves Abhay Tiwari, a former TDPL employee arrested on 22 July. Police allege he cleared around a dozen competitive exams over 13 years. His wife Sushma Kumari and brother Akshay Tiwari have also been arrested, and JSSC secretary Sudhir Gupta has been questioned. Investigators have described rate cards running from roughly ₹2-5 lakh to as much as ₹70 lakh a seat.

Jharkhand has been here before. The JSSC-CGL paper was pulled in January 2024 after a leak and re-run only in September that year. What's different now is scale: instead of cancelling one paper, the state has voided an entire vendor relationship and everything it touched.

"We got 22 exams cancelled. This is a major victory," student leader Ravindra Paswan of the JPSC-JSSC Reform Manch said, as quoted by The Print.

What This Means for Your Application

The notifications cancel exams. They do not, so far, say what replaces them. Where you stand depends entirely on which stage you'd reached.

If you already cleared and joined

Your appointment rests on an exam the state has now declared void. Nothing has been formally revoked yet, but the ground under those postings is genuinely uncertain — which is precisely why assistant section officers and labour enforcement officers walked to Birsa Chowk this week demanding a rollback.

If your result was still pending

Treat the process as ended, not paused. Keep your admit card, fee receipt, application number and every certificate you uploaded. When these Jharkhand recruitment exams are re-advertised, a fresh form is likely — and old records are the only proof you ever applied.

If you're near the upper age limit

No age relaxation or fee waiver has been announced. Given how many candidates have aged out during the delays, it's the single most important thing to watch for in the next round of notifications.

The Two-Month Clock That Starts Now

A committee under senior IAS officer Amitabh Kaushal has to recommend reforms within two months. The government has also asked the High Court for fast-track courts to handle exam-fraud cases, and plans internal monitoring cells inside both commissions. Devendra Nath Mahato, who ended a 16-day hunger strike on Monday, and the rest of the Manch have said they'll be back if the deadline slips.

Practical advice: check the JPSC and JSSC websites weekly rather than relying on coaching-centre WhatsApp forwards, save every document from your cancelled attempt, and mark mid-October on your calendar — that's when the Kaushal committee report is due, and it will tell you whether these exams come back with a new agency, a new pattern, or another long wait.
