Pixel 11 Pro Telephoto Focuses Twice as Close, Testers Say
Owners comparing shots side by side found the new 5x camera focuses far nearer than the Pixel 9 Pro's — a hardware change that never made it into Google's launch pitch.
The Pixel 11 Pro telephoto camera can lock focus on something roughly an arm's length closer than last year's model could, and Google didn't put that anywhere in its launch material. The change was spotted by owners, not by reviewers reading a spec sheet. Android Authority reported it on 19 August, crediting a Reddit user posting as pcman2000 who lined up close-range shots from a Pixel 11 Pro against a Pixel 9 Pro and found the older phone simply couldn't hold focus where the new one could.
The numbers matter here. On the Pixel 9 Pro, the 5x lens needed roughly 73 to 75cm of breathing room before autofocus would settle — about the length of a kitchen worktop. The tester's estimate is that the new phone manages roughly half that, or slightly less. That is the difference between photographing a flower from across the flowerbed and crouching over it.
For anyone in the UK whose pre-order lands this week, it's a quietly useful thing to know. Listings put the 256GB Pixel 11 Pro at £1,079 on the Google Store, with the first units shipping from 20 August. You are paying for a capability that wasn't advertised, which is an unusual way round for a phone launch.
What "twice as close" actually looks like
Minimum focus distance is the boring-sounding spec that decides whether a shot exists at all. Get inside it and the lens can't resolve anything — the preview goes soft and stays soft. Telephoto lenses are usually the worst offenders on a phone, because the periscope design that buys you 5x optical reach also pushes the closest usable distance out.
The Pixel 10 Pro already improved on the 9 Pro, but with a catch. Android Police reports it could focus down to around 30cm — yet only if you took manual control. Left in auto, the camera would quietly bail out at about 57cm and hand the job to a cropped shot from the main sensor instead. You got a picture, just not a telephoto one.
The Pixel 11 Pro's minimum focus distance is about half, or maybe even slightly less, the distance of the Pixel 9 Pro's telephoto, according to the Reddit tester whose comparison Android Authority cited.

The hardware moved, not just the software. This is the sort of change that normally gets a slide at a launch event.
A bigger sensor behind the 5x lens
The Pixel 9 Pro and 10 Pro both used Sony's IMX858 for the telephoto: 48 megapixels on a 1/2.55-inch sensor. The Pixel 11 Pro keeps the 48-megapixel count but moves to a noticeably larger 1/1.95-inch sensor, which nobody has publicly identified yet. Google's own marketing does mention a bigger 5x sensor gathering around 30% more light — it just never connected that to focusing distance.
No more silent switch to the main camera
The practical win is that the close focusing now happens in automatic mode. You don't have to remember to dive into Pro controls, and the phone shouldn't fall back to a cropped main-sensor frame the moment you lean in. That removes the most annoying part of the old behaviour: not knowing which camera actually took your photo.
Why would Google leave this out?
Most likely because it's awkward to promise. A minimum focus distance varies with light, contrast and how steady your hands are, so publishing a single number invites complaints when it doesn't hold. Google has never quoted an official figure for any Pixel telephoto. There's also the reality of modern launches — this year's stage time went to a 2nm chip, a new modem and AI features, and a focusing improvement is a hard sell to a general audience. Android Authority says Google had not responded to its request for comment at the time of publication.
How to get the shot on your own phone
Try it deliberately rather than hoping the camera works it out. Tap the 5x button so you're on the real lens rather than a digital crop, then move in until the preview softens and back off a few centimetres. That edge is your working distance, and it's worth learning once.
- Shoot flat-on where you can — depth of field at 5x close range is thin, so a tilted subject goes soft fast.
- Brace against something. Any wobble at this distance reads as blur, not shake.
- Watch your own shadow. Getting close means your hands and the phone block the light you need.
- Check the EXIF afterwards to confirm the 5x lens fired, not a crop.
What to watch over the next few weeks
Full reviews are still landing, and the useful ones will publish measured distances rather than estimates. Watch for two things: whether Google updates its published camera specifications to acknowledge the change, and whether a later camera update alters the automatic behaviour again, as happened between the 9 Pro and 10 Pro.
If you've ordered one, spend ten minutes on day one photographing something small — a watch face, a plant, a circuit board — at 5x, and find the point where focus gives up. If it doesn't behave as described, you've still got the 14-day cancellation right that applies to online orders in the UK, and knowing sooner is better than knowing on day fifteen.
